Loudon Wainwright III just turned 65 and he’s feelin’ old and way too retrospective. His new album Older Than My Old Man Now is filled with funny but depressing geezer dry humor about taking meds, heart attacks, sex, death and funerals and most important, family. That’s what holds this album together. Wainwright realizes that when it gets right down to it, family is the only thing that matters. He’s got his kids including Martha and Rufus plus ex wives and family members all over the album. And numerous guests. Older Than My Old Man Now is very witty but hard after awhile. An album that dwells with the reality we all have only so many years left is not one I want to listen more than once or twice. For a lot of Wainwright’s fans, it hits too close to home.
Here’s Wainwright with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.
