(Above podcast content: I spoke with singer Nina Storey via a phone chat. We talked about “Think Twice”, her latest album and played some tracks. Nina Storey is appearing at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, Sat. January 12th. Tess Dunn opens.)
“Think Twice” is number seven by the L.A. redhead with an impeccable killer voice, Nina Story. The singer – songwriter has crafted ten tracks of modern, slightly popish, funk oriented throwbacks to 60′s girl groups, soul and jazz singers with a nod to Eartha Kitt. Storey calls her current style “Future-Retro”.
The title track is just that – a warning to “Think Twice” about hooking up with a certain strong minded, possibly female, protagonist. “Gimme Some” at first starts off as a LaBelle styled funky dance party song but the clear message is about sharing the wealth. Storey says she was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement. “Come Back” is a reflective piece about making poor choices and knowing someone out there really cares for you.
Nina Storey’s outstandingly strong, at times smokey voice and her old school girl group background vocals give “Think Twice” a well thought out boost with more pop sensibility than previous albums. Storey’s underlying messages will make you “Think Twice”more than once. – Eric Berg
