Von Freeman: The Improvisor

The show features a selection by the veteran Chicago tenor saxophonist Von Freeman [pictured] who passed away this week at age 88.  Good videos of Freeman below — plus a thirty minute audio performance with the Charlie Parker Quintet recorded live in Chicago in 1950.

We also hear Paul Desmond with Gerry Mulligan and as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Ernestine Anderson, Tony Monaco, and Rex Stewart And His 52nd Street Stompers.

There will be some pieces by Ken Peplowski, whose quartet will perform this Friday as part of An Evening Of Clarinet” at Kuumbwa Jazz.

Patrick Jarenwattananon at NPR’s A Blog Supreme has a good tribute to Von Freeman.
