In the Groove

Bassist Oscar Pettiford

Sunday was the 90th anniversary of Oscar Pettiford‘s birth.  He was a top bassist from 1945 to his unexpected death in 1960.  We listen to a couple of selections from the mid-50′s on this week’s show, and I’ve included an interesting clip from the 1945 movie “The Crimson Canary” with Coleman Hawkins, tenor sax, Howard McGhee, trumpet, Sir Charles Thompson, piano, Denzil Best, drums, and Oscar Pettiford, bass.

Below that is a video of Dee Dee Bridgewater singing “Don’t Explain.”   The finale performance, aired on KUSP this last Sunday, of the all-star group Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, included this song and was one of the highlights of MJF55 for me.

The KUSP Monterey Jazz Blog includes on-air interviews, many of artists just after they stepped off the Arena stage, excellent MFJ photos, and a number of Jeff Dayton-Johnsons personal impressions of the festival.
