In the Groove

“The Biggest Little Band In The Land”

John Kirby, a popular bassist and group leader in the ’30′s and early ’40′s, is featured on KUSP’s In The Groove this week with three selections.  His Sextet was know as, you guessed it, the “Biggest Little Band In The Land.”

I found a movie clip of the group in action and I’ve also included a video of clarinetist Buster Bailey, a member of the group, later in his career on Art Ford’s Jazz Party. (Photo of Kirby and Bailey by William Gottlieb)

The show features a selection by Dorado Schmitt & The Django All-Stars who perform Monday, Nov. 12th at Kuumbwa Jazz.
