In the Groove

Pianist Mulgrew Miller RIP

Miller-Mulgrew-by-Jean-Francois-Laberine
Videos of the wonderful jazz pianist and great spirit, Mulgrew Miller, who passed away today at age 57.  I especially enjoyed getting more of a sense of the man by watching the interviews below.

We also hear some of his music on the show this week–plus recordings by Cannonball Adderley, Duke Ellington And His Orchestra, Bob Cooper, and Freddy Redd.  Also selections from new releases by Joshua Redman and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

We listen to tracks previewing vocalist Cyrille Aimée‘s performance at Kuumbwa Jazz on Monday.  (Mulgrew Miller photo by Jean Francois Laberine and some video suggestions by Alan Mertens.)

Bassist Rufus Reid

RufusReidThis week an hour long video of Rufus Reid in performance in a Vienna jazz club with Fritz Pauer on piano and John Hollenbeck on drums and Reid speaking about working with many jazz icons.

There is a selection by Rufus Reid on the show as well as cuts by Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Kenny Drew, and the Mill’s Blue Rhythm Band.  Recent recordings also by LaVerne Butler, Christian McBride, and Omar Sosa.  We also listen to tracks by Anthony Wilson, a member of the Seasons Guitar Quartet, who perform next Thursday at Kuumbwa Jazz in downtown Santa Cruz.
