Dave Douglas had the rare distinction for more than one year of receiving top honors in Downbeat’s annual critics awards in the categories of best trumpet player and trumpet TDWR [talent deserving wider recognition]. Though we would be well served to make his more of a household name in the U.S., since 1993 his international reputation has soared, with some 40 dates as a leader and numerous collaborative and sideman dates. Dave also blows horn as one of the members of the longstanding and unique John Zorn repertory group Masada on all of their 19 recordings.
Throughout his career and evident in his set own quintet’s set at Monterey, Dave is a thinking musician with solid skills in improve and composition. KUSP’s Maiya Evans caught up with Dave just after his forward focused set in MJF’s Friday Nightclub.
