Day 2 Has Dawned at MJF

The KUSP Sturgeon (our mobile sound van) at the ready for presenting Day 2 at MJF. Huey Lewis did an early soundcheck. Amazing the hear the fullness of  horn section and his deepening – gravely voice echoing through the morning air. You can tune in and catch his  live performance at 3 pm today. And before that, don’t miss the An Afternoon in Treme: Musical Majesty of New Orleans at 1pm, all on KUSP!

The world’s oldest operating jazz fest is gonna be chock full of old faves and new talents all weekend long.  Here’s KUSP’s broadcast lineup for Day 2 of the 54th annual Monterey Jazz Festival!

An Afternoon in “Treme”: The Musical Majesty of New Orleans with Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Glen David Andrews and Kermit Ruffins w/special guest MC Wendell Pierce.

KUSP usually has the sounds of the Big Easy Saturday afternoons on the Crescent City Shuffle with Papa Sam. Tomorrow Sam will join our other K-U-S-Personalities for a New Orleans-themed Saturday afternoon. A special shout out goes to Kermit Ruffin, seen almost weekly on HBO’s Treme.  He’s so cool he’ll give you goosebumps!

Huey Lewis & The News: So in case you’re not exactly sure why Huey’s here, just check out this mean horn section. If those dudes can’t jazz up your Saturday afternoon, who can? Huey’s latest album is a tribute to the artists and music of Stax Records.  Ready yourself for some soulful renditions of old favorites.

Geri Allen & Timeline: The Dazzle, A Jazz Tap Tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.: The famed jazz piano and band leader meshes the avant garde with the traditional.  She’ll play tribute to the late, great Sammy Davis Jr. with Timeline.

James Farm: A powerhouse quartet composed of Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman & Eric Harland. The gents are slated to play some haunting grooves, so get ready to be moved.

Herbie Hancock: The master architect of jazz and funk-synthesis is an MJF favorite and a 2008 Grammy Award-winner for nothing less than ‘Album of the Year’. This legendary pianist, composer and bandleader will not disappoint!
