The world’s oldest operating jazz fest is gonna be chock full of old faves and new talents all weekend long. Here’s KUSP’s broadcast lineup for Day 2 of the 54th annual Monterey Jazz Festival!
An Afternoon in “Treme”: The Musical Majesty of New Orleans with Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Glen David Andrews and Kermit Ruffins w/special guest MC Wendell Pierce.
KUSP usually has the sounds of the Big Easy Saturday afternoons on the Crescent City Shuffle with Papa Sam. Tomorrow Sam will join our other K-U-S-Personalities for a New Orleans-themed Saturday afternoon. A special shout out goes to Kermit Ruffin, seen almost weekly on HBO’s Treme. He’s so cool he’ll give you goosebumps!
Huey Lewis & The News: So in case you’re not exactly sure why Huey’s here, just check out this mean horn section. If those dudes can’t jazz up your Saturday afternoon, who can? Huey’s latest album is a tribute to the artists and music of Stax Records. Ready yourself for some soulful renditions of old favorites.
Geri Allen & Timeline: The Dazzle, A Jazz Tap Tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.: The famed jazz piano and band leader meshes the avant garde with the traditional. She’ll play tribute to the late, great Sammy Davis Jr. with Timeline.
James Farm: A powerhouse quartet composed of Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman & Eric Harland. The gents are slated to play some haunting grooves, so get ready to be moved.
Herbie Hancock: The master architect of jazz and funk-synthesis is an MJF favorite and a 2008 Grammy Award-winner for nothing less than ‘Album of the Year’. This legendary pianist, composer and bandleader will not disappoint!
